The document portrait contains great visual elements. The lighting used in the photo allows for highlights and shadows to span across the scene. By having these light and dark spaces within the photograph, the viewer’s eye is able to flow easily across the image. The light and shadows also allow for more details of the face to be exposed. For example, the dimple of the face is able to be prominently shown. Another example would be the eyes. The eyes reflecting the light give information to the viewer on what direction the light is coming from. The eyes reflection of the light is done so in a way which allows them not to become a visual distraction. The face in the photograph is in sharp focus, which allows for the details of the face to be more distinctive. The singular-colored wall allows the document portrait to give sole focus on the face. One way in which the image could be improved upon is by extending the frame to contain the rest of the head. With this addition of details, the face and photograph as a whole will feel more complete. I think by not having the full face we are missing details needed to complete the puzzle. The Interpretative photograph does a great job of eliciting emotions. The darkness of the image conveys a message of mysteriousness. It creates a sense of curiosity in the viewer wondering what the figure is going to do next. The emotion seems to be mostly captured within the eyes of the face. The viewers are able to see that the figure is in deep thought. The blurred lights in the background help show the spacial depth of the scene. The wall between the face and the outside allows for a distinct separation of the two environments. Since the image does not use a great amount of light the septum ring is a bit of a visual distraction by absorbing most of the light. A way to improve the image would be to increase the light shown on the face. This will allow for more of the face besides just the metal ring to be illuminated. The environmental image does a nice job presenting the figure within their own environment. From the composition, I am able to see the story behind the photograph. I can see that the figure is at work using this piano. The two walls at the ends of the frame create a balance that helps to frame the rest of the image. The large dark space in the center of the image is a bit visually distracting. It takes away one’s attention from the rest of the image and also seems to absorb the figure as well. The use of lines and patterns on the clothing, papers, and ground of the image help guide the viewer’s eye around the photograph. A way to improve this image would be to display more of the environment. Besides the small glimpse of the keyboard, papers, and dog, the viewer is not able to see much of the individual’s environment. Either changing the point of or reframing the image would allow for more of the figure’s environment to be shown.
